LEGENDARY Waterford cyclist Sean Kelly made a generous presentation last weekend to one important local charity.
From funds raised by the annual Sean Kelly Three Counties Cycle, the 66-year-old cycling veteran presented a cheque for €68,888 to Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL) – a group who provide essential programmes for Limerick people of all ages with Down Syndrome and their families. This is the charity’s second year receiving support from the cross-county cycling event.
Held last September, the cycle saw 550 cycling undertake 50 and 100km routes across Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary.
Speaking about his involvement with the group, Kelly said: “Down Syndrome Limerick is a great charity that does so much work to help children and adults with Down syndrome. It is easy to get involved and behind the work that they do when you see parents working so hard to provide the services that their children need and deserve.”
Ellen Tuffy, Chairperson of Down Syndrome Limerick expressed her thanks to Kelly and event organisers, saying: “We are so grateful to Sean Kelly and the organising committee, the volunteers involved and all the cyclists who come out to support us. Down Syndrome Limerick needs fundraisers like this in order to continue providing support and services to our members, to help them to achieve their full potential. Many of our children are not getting adequate services elsewhere and the demand for services at the charity is therefore at an all-time high.” The next edition of the Sean Kelly Three Counties Cycle is scheduled for September 17.
