Limerick edge closer to league play-offs

Limerick players in a huddle before their league clash against Galway.

BACK-TO-BACK wins over Clare and Galway have pushed Limerick into prime contention for National Hurling League semi-final qualification.

A fortnight ago, the Shannonsiders breezed past Clare at the Gaelic Grounds. On Sunday, inspired by eight points from the flawless Tom Morrissey, the Limerick men always had enough in hand to dispose of Galway in front of around 12,000 supporters at Pearse Stadium, Salthill.

Limerick have won the pennant competition on 13 previous occasions, most recently in 2020.

Man-of-the-match Morrissey was presented with his award by older brother Dan, who spoke afterwards to TG4 about Limerick’s interest in winning out the league: “I think every day you go out you want to win. No matter who you play, you go out to win.”

“We’re going out to win every game. A league medal is special, there’s plenty of people out there than have never won a league medal.”

He added: “It’s an important medal to have and I cherish the couple of league medals I have. The turnaround between the league and championship is pretty short (a fortnight between the league final and Limerick’s Championship opener against Waterford) but we will still be going out to win every game put in front of us.”

Said Tom: “Sporting careers are short, you want to win everything you can get your hands-on, league, Munster Championship, All-Ireland Championship. It would be a shame to end your career with only two league medals, as it’s a great competition and one you want to win.”

Limerick will travel to Westmeath, who have no league points so far, on the weekend after next before Wexford visit the Gaelic Grounds on March 19.

The league semi-finals are listed for a fortnight after and the final for Sunday April 8.

From Division 1A, Limerick and Cork are chosen to advance, while in Division 1B Tipperary and Waterford are well positioned to progress.
