Limerick link to long-running card game

KING John, the British monarch most closely associated with Limerick City, will soon be featured in a long-running card game.

Top Trumps cards have released a new pack to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III on May 6 which will feature the likes of Oliver Cromwell, King Henry VIII and King John, who ordered the building of King John’s Castle alongside the River Shannon in 1200.

The game takes players through Saxon times, to the Tudor Kings and will feature information on each monarch such as how long they reigned for, how many children they had and what age they survived to.

The Top Trumps card game was first published in 1978. Each card has a list of numerical data for players to compare and try and trump and win the opponent’s card.

The Top Trumps Kings & Queens pack offers the opportunity to learn about Britain’s colourful Royal history in an entertaining way.

King John was crowned in 1199 and was made Lord of Ireland. A year after his coronation, John ordered the building of the castle in  Limerick to protect the city from rebels from other parts of Ireland.

The cards are available to buy on Amazon and in toy shops around the Treaty County.
