Elderly woman killed in single-car crash in County Clare

AN ELDERLY woman was fatally injured in County Clare yesterday evening (Sunday) when a car she was a passenger in collided with a ditch.

According to a statement by An Garda Síochána, the fatal crash occurred in the townland of Ballinagun, near Kilrush in County Clare, around 9.20pm yesterday evening.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was a rear-seat passenger in the car, and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.

A Garda spokesman described the crash as a “single vehicle collision”, in which the car collided with a ditch on the R483, causing “significant damage” to the vehicle. The wellbeing of the driver, or whether there were other passengers in the car, is not currently known.

The R483 remained closed into this morning, pending technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are in place.

Gardaí in Kilrush have appealed to anyone who may have useful information regarding the crash to come forward. They are seeking information from any drivers who may have been travelling between Ballinagun and Cree, County Clare, yesterday evening between 8.45pm and 9.45pm and who may have dash-cam footage that can aid in the investigation.
