Emily Costello enters Winners’ Enclosure

ANDREW Slattery-trained Avakate provided Quin amateur rider Emily Costello with her first winner when scoring an impressive success in the concluding Ladies’ Bumper at Roscommon recently.

On just her fourth ride inside the rails, Costello, a granddaughter of the late Tom Costello and a daughter of former dual Point-to-Point champion Dermot, brought the John O’Neill-owned 17/2 chance from the back of the field to lead passing the two-furlong pole and at the line, the partnership had one and a quarter lengths to spare over the Willie Mullins-trained 8/15 favourite Coole Cherry and Jody Townend.

Meanwhile, there’s superb racing at Killarney’s July Festival Meeting across this week, while Limerick has a lovely National Hunt card on Thursday of next week (July 27).
