Workers who lose jobs may soon be entitled to enhanced welfare payments

WORKERS who lose their jobs may soon be able to avail of weekly welfare payments of up to €450.

That’s what was promised by Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys, who is to bring a proposal to Cabinet for new pay-related benefits.

The new benefits will see those who lose their jobs receive welfare equalling 60 per cent of their weekly income to a maximum of €450 per week.

Pending Government approval, the provision may come into effect as early as next year.
