Anniversary marked of the death of Limerick’s first Columban martyr

FAMILY and clergy recently marked the 94th anniversary Mass for Limerick native Father Timothy Leonard, the first Columban martyr.

Mass was said in honour of Fr Leonard at the Poor Clare Monastery by Fr Gerry Neylon, SSC, of Dalgan Park Centre in Ennis, and was attended are Carmel Leonard and John Leonard, of Corbally.

Fr Leonard was killed in China on July 17, 1929, by communist bandits.

A native of Ballysimon, Fr Leonard was ordained for the Diocese of Limerick before joining the Columban Fathers in 1918.

He was found guilty in a mock trial after which he was thrown on the ground and hacked to death.
