LIMERICK has the fifth highest number of charities in the country, according to the Charities Regulator’s Annual Report for 2022.

The Treaty County has 496 registered charities, the fifth highest behind Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Donegal.

The Regulator’s report found that governance standards are continuing to improve in the sector, but that there is more to be done.

Only 59 per cent of all of Ireland’s 11,506 registered charities filed an annual report on their finances on time in 2022, despite being legally obligated to do so.

The contents of these reports are published on the Register of Charities and provide essential information to help inform donors and the general public.

The report also found that 75 per cent of Ireland’s charities declare full compliance with the Charity Governance Code.

Helen Martin, Chief Executive of the Charities Regulator, said it was “disappointing” to see so many charities not filing their annual financial reports on time.

“It is very disappointing to see charities fail to comply with their obligations to complete and file an annual report on time with the Regulator.”

“This report provides a vital window into a charity’s work for the general public and for potential donors and volunteers. And, for the many charities that file on time, it demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability to their supporters and the wider public,” she said.

“There is a clear and direct link between public trust in the charity sector and transparency and accountability within the sector,” said Ms Martin.

“As a regulator, we strive to assist charities in meeting their regulatory requirements, but ultimately, it is charities and their trustees who are best placed to ensure they are meeting their legal obligations and operating transparently and in an appropriate manner at all times.”

According to the Charities Regulator, an average of 12 concerns are raised by members of the public per week.
