Gardaí seeking witnesses after driver dies in border bridge collision

GARDAÍ in Limerick have appealed for witnesses to a road traffic collision early this morning (Sunday) that claimed the life of a man in his 30s.

The man, who was driving a minibus, died after the bus struck Athlunkard Bridge in Corbally, a border line between Limerick and south east Clare.

The man was the sole occupant of the bus and no other vehicle was involved, Gardaí said.

“Gardaí are currently at the scene of a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 2.55am this morning Sunday 5th November 2023 on the R463 at Athlunkard Bridge, Corbally Road, County Limerick,” said a Garda spokeswoman.

“A male driver of a minibus and sole occupant of the vehicle, aged 30 years was fatally injured when the minibus struck the bridge.

“His body has since been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.

“The R463 at Athlunkard Bridge, Corbally, is currently closed with local diversions in place. The services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested.”

Appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward, the Garda spokeswoman said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) and were travelling on the R463 between 2.30am and 3.30am this morning Sunday 5th November, 2023 are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”
