Interesting times in Munster Junior Rugby Leagues

Richmond, recent winners of the Munster Club of the Year.

IN-FORM Thomond are right in the mix for Munster Junior League Division One honours.

At the weekend, Thomond recorded their fourth successive bonus point win with a 31-11 victory over Kilfeacle at Liam Fitzgerald Park.

Tries from Colin Slater and Jordan O’Donnell and a conversion from Evan Cusack gave Thomond a 12-3 interval lead. Pa Ryan scored two tries and Jason Kiely one after the break to put the game beyond their visitors. Cusack converted two of the tries.

Elsewhere, defending champions Richmond moved off the bottom of the table with a 27-13 home win against Clanwilliam.

Jeffrey McNamara, Dillon Cotter, Nigel Clancy, and Keith McCarthy scored tries for Richmond. Jack Cross kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Newcastle West also got their first victory with a 27-7 bonus point win at home to Charleville, a result that leaves the north Cork side at the foot of the table. Aaron Rice, James Guina, Liam Treacy and Sean Murphy scored tries for the winners and Shane Airey kicked  two conversions. Jake Madigan replied with a try for Charleville which Kian Smith converted.

In Division Two, Abbeyfeale had a 24-15 bonus point home win against Old Christians. Gearoid Scannell, Donncha Maher, Diarmuid Buckley and James O’Sullivan scored tries for Abbeyfeale, with O’Sullivan kicking two conversions.

Galbally-Mitchelstown picked up their first points of the campaign with a 16-14 home win against Ballincollig. Davey Sheehan and Danny McGrath scored tries for the winners and John Kearns kicked two penalties.
