PLANS for a youth hostel in the city centre have been given the green light by council planners.

Flan Costello, the owner of the well-known former Costello’s Tavern on Dominic Street, had applied to Limerick City and County Council to develop a youth hostel on the site of the former Milk Market Bar on Mungret Street.

The development will consist of a first floor extension, first floor smoking area, a second floor extension, as well as minor elevational changes, and the change of use of a portion of the existing ground floor, and the entire existing first and second floors to youth hostel accommodation and all ancillary site works.

Planners for Limerick City and County Council gave the plans the green light this week, subject to nine conditions.

Among these conditions are ones relating to the hours that development works can take place on the site, the storage of bins, and the permitted volume of amplified music.
