Mayoral Reception for Limerick’s pioneering Women Footballers

A recent picture of some members of that ground-breaking Limerick team, to be honoured by Mayor Mitchell.

TO MARK the Golden Jubilee (50 years) of an historic sporting breakthrough by Limerick Ladies FC, Mayor Gerald Mitchell will host a Civic Reception at his Chambers on Wednesday next.

Managed by Frank ‘Junior’ Keane, Limerick won the inaugural League of Ireland championship in 1973, and retained the title 12 months later.

In 1975, the team were the first winners of the FAI Cup.

Around this time, Limerick supplied plenty of players for the then fledging Republic of Ireland side.

Without question, this pioneering group of individuals will always hold a special place in the history of Irish Women’s Football.
