New Garda operation in Limerick to target retail crime

LIMERICK retailers and retail workers will benefit from a new Garda operation focusing on organised retail crime.

That’s according to Fine Gael senator Maria Byrne, who this week welcomed the operation, called Operation Táirge, which will see Gardaí crack down on crimes such as the bulk thefts of retails good for resale on the black market.

“We know a lot of our local retailers in Limerick operate tight profit margins and, in the run-up to the busy Christmas trading period, they need certainty that their stock is not at risk of theft,” the Limerick senator said.

“Retail crime costs retailers in Ireland in the region of €1.62billion each year. Business owners and staff must feel safe and protected from this kind of criminality.”
