Women’s Day concert in Limerick to welcome spring with a song

The Gúnas will perform in St Mary's Church in Kilmane on International Women's Day.

NOT JUST one but two award-winning women’s choirs will present a special spring choral concert to celebrate International Women’s Day (Friday March 8) at St Mary’s Church in Kilbane.

The Gúnas of Killaloe and Limerick’s Seoda Chamber Choir are set to join forces for the special singing celebration.

Both female choirs have been toasted for their contributions to the musical landscape of the Mid West.

Under the direction of Rhoda Clery (The Gúnas) and Máire Keary Scanlon (Seoda), the choirs will perform old favourites in the 19th century church, accompanied by pianist Irina Dernova and violinist Lucia Murphy.

It is third time lucky for this choral event, as concerts scheduled in December 2022 and March 2023 had to be cancelled due to snow.

In recent times, St Mary’s Church has undergone a complete refurbishment by a small group of local volunteers, with minimal funding and a great deal of local support.

While retaining its liturgical integrity, it has become a centre for music, crafts, and community gatherings.

This International Women’s Day, the church community is preparing to see the space re-imagined once again and will extend a warm welcome to the choral groups.

The concert is a free event and organisers say refreshments will be served after the performance. There will also be an opportunity for members of the audience to make a donation.

“Beautiful music in beautiful surroundings is guaranteed,” organisers said.

The concert will take place from 7.30pm on Friday March 8 at St Mary’s Church in Kilbane.
