A NEWCASTLE West woman was stripped of a substantial sum by a scammer pretending to be working for her bank.

According to Sergeant Ber Leetch, of Henry Street Garda Station, the woman received a call from a man claiming to be from her bank and instructing her to change her PIN number.

She agreed and was forwarded to an automated service. Following this, she received a legitimate call from her bank informing her that €10,000 had been removed from her account.

“When it comes to protecting yourself from a scam, an important element is to be very suspicious of any contact that you did not initiate,” Sergeant Leetch warned.
