Limerick Student photographers snap up national awards.

COLLEGE of FET Mulgrave Street Campus celebrated this week after picking up two major prizes at the National Student Media Awards (SMEDIAs).

The annual awards took place in The Mansion House in Dublin on April 10, where a number of FET students were shortlisted for awards including News Photographer of the Year and Photographer of the Year.

Jake Rowat, Gerard O’Brien, and Allison Bendey were lauded in the first category, with Jake Rowat taking the sought-after News Photographer of the Year award.

In the second category, Maia Gosseau and Céline Mermier were shortlisted with Céline taking the coveted Photographer of the Year award.

College of FET Mulgrave Street Campus has a winning history in the SMEDIAs, with photography students from the college previously picking up News Photographer of the Year, Sports Photographer of the Year, and Photographer of the Year awards.

To date FET students have received a total of 15 awards at the SMEDIAs.

Eoin McCarthy, head of the college’s creative media department, said that he “would like to congratulate Jake and Céline on winning these awards and to thank all of our photography learners who submitted their work to this year’s event”.

“Our success in the SMEDIAs is all the more significant given that we are competing against third level college students in all the different categories.”
