Labour’s DEM hopeful vows to be ‘mayor for housing’

LABOUR councillor Conor Sheehan was officially selected last week as his party’s candidate for the first direct election of a mayor in Limerick.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik, Deputy Alan Kelly, and Labour European elections candidate for Ireland South, Niamh Hourigan, were all in attendance at the event in the Absolute Hotel.

Cllr Sheehan has served as a councillor for Limerick City North since his election in 2019. His journey into politics, he says, stems from a deep-seated belief that everyone in Limerick deserves a voice at the table, particularly the economically disadvantaged and those who have struggled because of the housing crisis.

“I want to be the voice at the top table for people who have suffered on foot of the economic and housing crisis,” Cllr Sheahan said.

“My pledge is to be the mayor for housing. For many people my age in Limerick, the legitimate aspiration to work hard, save, and eventually buy your own home is slipping away. I am standing in this election because I want to put in place a mayoral programme to deliver the homes we need.

“I passionately believe in Limerick. It’s where I’m from, where I’ve worked and studied, but I think we can do better. I want to make Limerick the best place in Ireland to work, live, and raise a family. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have controlled Limerick council for over 10 years. They have had their day. It’s time now for change. It’s time for a fresh start.”
