Finishing stretch beckons in Irish St. Leger

JUST 12 greyhounds remain in the Willwego.com Irish St. Leger (winner’s prize €30,000) at Limerick, with both semi-finals at the heart of a tremendous card at Greenpark on Saturday, 7.40pm onwards.

Kirby winner Knockeen Dazzler, trained in Kerry by teenager Daniel O’Rahilly, produced the fastest quarter-final run of 29.49.

Another of the sport’s rising trainers in Lucy Roche (18), of Cappagh had a brilliant night with Hazelhill Bucko winning its quarter-final in style

Another heat was won by the useful Ballyhimikin Rex.

Paul Hennessy’s Barefoot on Fire also won its quarter impressively.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for Greyhound Racing Ireland, said: “Knockeen Dazzler adores Limerick, and he is getting better with each run. The same can be said about defending champion Clonbrien Treaty (second at the weekend) who is coming into his top form at the right time. The pair meet in the semi-finals which promises to be an absolute cracker of a battle.

“This is turning into one of the most competitive Irish St Legers as the likes of Jaytee Craze and Ballyhimikin Rex are running out of their skin.”
