ANOTHER taste of Hollywood glitz and glamour was to be had on Shannonside last week, as the Irish premier of Bonhoeffer was hosted at the Belltable in Limerick City.
The premier, held on February 25, saw a red carpet reception with local and international figures in the film industry rubbing shoulders with eager local film fans.
Academy Award nominated director Todd Komarnicki (Elf and Sully) was on hand to showcase the film to a receptive Limerick audience.
The World War II biopic was filmed extensively across Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary, seeing Irish streets and landscapes transformed into 1940s Germany for the major feature film.
Limerickโs Georgian Quarter played host to a large segment of the filming, in the guise of 1940s London, alongside the baronial style Castle Oliver in the county.
The River Shannon also had a cameo role doubling as the Danube River.
The film is set for general release across Ireland on March 7 โ the birthday of theologian and anti-Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer, upon whose life the film was based.
โBonhoeffer brings to life the extraordinary courage and unwavering conviction of a man who stood against the tyranny of the Nazi regime during one of history’s darkest periods. The film delves into Bonhoeffer’s moral and spiritual struggle, portraying his efforts to resist oppression as well as ultimately his sacrifice,โ a spokesperson said.
โThe filmโs release comes at a time when Bonhoefferโs legacy of courage and moral clarity feels more relevant than ever. Audiences can expect a thought-provoking, emotionally charged narrative that sheds light on an extraordinary life of resistance and faith.โ
The premier comes at the same time as news of further onscreen fame for Limerick, with production soon to begin in Troy Studios on Foxโs Donโt Forget the Lyrics singing gameshow.
