Support for Dooneen Athletics land disposal marks key step in community development

Disposal of land for Dooneen Athletics Club has been described as a key step forward.

FINE Gael councillor Daniel Butler has welcomed progress made with support for the disposal of land in Mungret to Dooneen Athletics as a major step forward in the delivery of a dedicated athletics facility for the local community.

This move, according to Cllr Butler, follows a long-standing vision that began over eight years ago, when a comprehensive masterplan was approved for the area.

The plan saw the allocation of land for a range of community assets, including Mungret Community College, local primary schools, Mungret GAA, and Mungret Park.

“I was proud to support Dooneen Athletics back then when the land was first secured, and I’m equally proud to support them again today as they move forward to formally purchase and develop the site,” Cllr Butler told the Limerick Post.

“This facility will serve not just the immediate area, but the broader region, offering much-needed resources for athletics and community engagement. It’s a project that’s been years in the making, and I’m delighted to see it reach this next milestone.”

Cllr Butler also highlighted the importance of continued collective effort.

“Once this is passed, the responsibility is on all of us — as a community – to ensure its success and long-term benefit. Dooneen will need our support to see this through to completion so when the time comes lets get behind them,” he said.

“The development of this athletics facility is expected to significantly enhance local sporting infrastructure, offering a space for current and future generations to train, compete, and connect.”
