Spotlight Stage School, a cornerstone of the local arts community for nearly four decades, is marking a momentous occasion this May with its end-of-year production Back to the Future, while also announcing a major leadership transition.

The family-friendly show, promising an energetic mix of drama, dance and music, will be staged across four performances on Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18 at the Lime Tree Theatre. The event will not only showcase the vibrant talent of Spotlightโ€™s students but also pay tribute to Margaret Hough and Judy Oโ€™Connor, who are set to retire after 39 inspiring years at the helm.

Since Spotlight Stage School began in 1986, Hough and Oโ€™Connor have dedicated their lives to nurturing young performers, fostering creativity and instilling confidence in generations of students across Limerick and beyond. Their legacy is deeply woven into the cityโ€™s cultural fabric.

โ€œIt has been an absolute joy to watch generations of young people grow in confidence, creativity, and talent,โ€ said Margaret and Judy. โ€œWe are confident that under Sadhbhโ€™s leadership, Spotlight will continue to thrive.โ€

In a fitting passing of the torch, Spotlight will continue its journey under the guidance of former student Sadhbh McCoy. A pupil from the age of five, McCoy returns with a wealth of experience in performance, production and arts management, both in Ireland and internationally.

McCoyโ€™s journey in the arts has taken her from Spotlight classes to the London stage, including a key role working with MAMMA MIA! producer Judy Craymer on the West End production and its global tours, as well as the film sequel MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again. She also worked extensively with Lime Tree Theatre and Belltable on major projects including the annual professional pantomime and new theatrical works.

โ€œI am proud and excited to continue the incredible legacy left by Margaret and Judy at Spotlight,โ€ said McCoy. โ€œSpotlight has always been a place where young people can build confidence and discover their passion for the arts, just as it did for me. I look forward to leading this wonderful school into a new chapter.โ€

The May performances will cap off the schoolโ€™s 39th year, with celebrations continuing into September as Spotlight reaches the milestone of its 40th anniversary. Enrolments for the new term will open at the end of the summer.

A Legacy of Excellence

Margaret Hough, a founding member of Granary Players, has brought decades of theatrical expertise to Spotlight, including award-winning direction and original scriptwriting. She is also a familiar face from RTร‰โ€™s Killinaskully and Mattie, and a current member of Seoda Chamber Choir.

Judy Oโ€™Connorโ€™s background in dance and musical theatre spans continents. Having toured internationally with Up With People, she later returned to Limerick and took leading roles in celebrated musicals. Her talents have earned her two AIMS awards and acclaim for her performances with Cecilian Musical Society, Granary Players, and her annual Christmas with Judy Supperclub.

Spotlight Stage Schoolโ€™s contribution to Limerickโ€™s artistic life is immeasurable, having helped countless students find their voiceโ€”many of whom have gone on to professional careers in the arts.

As Back to the Future hits the Lime Tree stage, it marks not just a celebration of student achievement, but a heartfelt tribute to the enduring impact of two extraordinary women and the exciting promise of the future under new leadership.
