Limerick’s Market Quarter and Cruises Street areas to get multi-million euro upgrade

Public consultation started this week and will run until June 9th.

THE city centre’s Market Quarter and Cruises Street areas are due a multi-million euro upgrade and the public are now being invited to have their say on proposed plans.

Government funding of €15million has been committed under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, with plans including a 40 per cent increase in pedestrian space, a new canopy for Cruises Street, weekend street closures, extra trees, and more public seating.

Council Priomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Dan McSweeney, has welcomed progress in the Market Quarter describing it as “a positive step forward” for the city as the Part 8 process begins. The Fine Gael man is now encouraging the people of Limerick to engage in the process.

“This is a positive step forward for a vital piece of urban renewal in our city centre,” Cllr McSweeney said.

“The government has already committed significant funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund for this scheme, and this project has been in development for some time, with strong and constructive engagement already held with many stakeholders.”
Cllr McSweeney set out the importance of public participation in shaping the next stages of this scheme.
“I would be hopeful that key learnings from Phase 1 of the O’Connell Street revitalisation project have been taken on board. I strongly encourage members of the public to take part in the current consultation process, as this is an opportunity to shape the future of our city by working in partnership.”
Public consultation started this week and runs until June 9.
