Something for everyone at Knockaderry Village Fayre

THERE will be something for all the family at the Knockaderry Village Fayre, kicking off in the West Limerick town this Thursday.

Running from August 14 to 17, this yearโ€™s festival boasts a strong historical theme, with events remembering the life of a pioneering Limerick sportswoman and aviator, organised by the Knockaderry Community Council.

Among the packed lineup this year will be a 45 card drive in the Knockaderry Resource Centre on Friday August 15 at 7pm. On Saturday, in association with Newcastle West Golf Club, there will be a golf classic at 5.30pm along with children’s games in the hurling field.

Organisers said that a highlight of the weekend will be the main Knockaderry Village Fayre on Sunday August 17, taking place on the villageโ€™s main street and promising sideshows, childrens train rides, hurling and soccer skills events, food, and entertainment.

The Swingman will be providing the tunes throughout Sunday, while local musicians will be playing into the night with a musical evening in the Halla Beag.

A large focus of this yearโ€™s festival is on the life of the pioneering sportswoman and aviator, Sophie Pierce (Lady Mary Heath).

Born in Knockaderry in 1896, the year of the revival of the Olympic Games, Sophie Pierce had a storied life, from serving in the army in World War I to becoming the first woman to fly solo from London to Cape Town.

A heritage evening to recall her life and times will take place at 8pm at the Knockaderry Resource Centre on August 14.
