Limerick food projects spiced up with a spoonful of cash

The organisation will also host a Food Finder Assembly to bring together organisations working to address food poverty.

THREE Limerick community food projects have been spiced up with a tasty funding injection from Safefood’s โ‚ฌ1.5million Healthy Eating Initiative.

The four-year initiative aims to positively influence the eating habits of people in low-income communities throughout Ireland, fostering lasting change and strengthening community resilience around healthier eating.

Receiving funding locally is Ballyhoura Development, serving communities in east Limerick (and north east Cork), to help deliver family cooking programmes through the Healthy Food Made Easy scheme.

The project also integrates with a food mapping project across Limerick, involving the community in mapping their own food environment to understand how to make healthy eating choices.

PAUL Partnership Limerick, serving communities in east and west Limerick, is also to receive funding to help deliver the Healthy Food Made Easy programme, offering taster workshops to kickstart initiatives, allowing Paul Partnership to tailor programmes to participants’ needs.

The organisation will also host a Food Finder Assembly to bring together organisations working to address food poverty.

Mid West Simon Community, serving communities in Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary, will deliver classes in food budgeting, cooking, meal planning, and reducing food waste, as well as cultural food sharing events.

The Simon Community also plans to create participant-driven recipe collections and budgeting tips aimed at low-income households, vulnerable groups, and isolated individuals in the local community.

The Safefood funding will support each group to establish, manage, and sustain a local food initiative that promotes lasting behaviour change and strengthens community resilience around healthier eating.
