MORE people than ever are travelling to and from Limerick by train.

That’s according to yearly journey tallies from Iarnród Éireann, which showed demand on the Limerick to Dublin Intercity Route last year surged by over nine per cent on 2024 to 1.09 million journeys – a new record high, beating 2019’s pre-pandemic record for 1.07 million.

Growth was also noted on the Limerick to Galway route, four per cent up from 2024 to 2025 seeing 770,000 journeys across last year.

Rail journeys were up nationally last year to 55 million from 50 million in 2024.

Iarnród Éireann said that, in part due to the increased passenger up-take, an additional platform is planned for Limerick Junction, which would see improved services from Limerick to Waterford and direct Limerick to Cork services by 2030.
