Award-winning Norwegian composer and brass virtuoso Daniel Herskedal brings his celebrated trio to Lime Tree Theatre on October 22, presenting music that has redefined perceptions of the tuba as a lead instrument.

Herskedal, renowned for his work on tuba and bass trumpet, performs alongside pianist Helge Lien and percussionist Helge Andreas Norbakken. The Guardian has praised his “radiant eloquence and flawless virtuosity”, whilst All About Jazz declared: “The tuba has never sounded this cool.”

Over the past decade, Herskedal has crafted a distinctive sound drawing from folk, jazz, classical and Arabic influences. His music is characterised by melodic resonance and atmospheric textures that critics describe as both introspective and cinematic. He received the Spellemann prize—Norway’s equivalent to the Grammy—in 2021 for his solo album Call For Winter.

Beyond recording, Herskedal has established himself as a leading composer, receiving commissions from the BBC Concert Orchestra and Marine Music. He made his film scoring debut in 2019 with The Last Black Man in San Francisco, produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B company, and won Best Original Score at The Ambies in Los Angeles for the podcast 9/12.

His latest release, Movements of Air, marks his tenth album with Edition Records and showcases the evolving artistry that has made him one of contemporary jazz’s most innovative voices.
