LIMERICK Greenway has achieved international recognition after being awarded third prize in the Excellence category at the 12th European Greenways Awards ceremony, held in Spain.
Limerick Greenway was recognised for its impact on rural regeneration, tourism, and wellbeing.
Developed by Limerick City and County Council, the 40km off-road trail repurposes the former Limerick–Tralee railway line, connecting Rathkeale, Ardagh, Newcastle West, Barnagh, Templeglantine, and Abbeyfeale.
Since opening in 2021, Limerick Greenway has welcomed over 680,000 users, contributed significantly to the local economy, and provided meaningful social benefits to the community.
It features age-friendly infrastructure, accessible paths, heritage restoration, and inclusive amenities such as U-Turn audio installations with Irish Sign Language interpretation.
