Limerick’s Light Moves Festival returns for its eighth edition from Thursday November 6 to Saturday November 8 showcasing bold and innovative dance, film, sound and media art from leading Irish and international artists.
This year’s programme features Limerick artists Tobi Omoteso, Peìist, Lisa Cliffe, Mary Nunan, Angie Smalis and Anastasiia Lapko alongside screenings, live performances, free events, workshops and talks across the city.
The festival launches on the evening of Thursday November 6 with a free screening featuring Invein from Limerick-based street dance artist Tobi Omoteso, followed by Groundwork, a live performance combining sound, music and visuals.
The piece brings together improvised noise group Péist and artist Billy Kemp with movement from Aoibhinn O’Dea.
On Saturday November 8, Light Moves presents events focusing on Palestine and Palestinian artists. The Belltable will screen they shoot horses, a critically acclaimed video installation by Turner Prize-nominated artist Phil Collins, depicting a disco dance marathon with young people from Ramallah.
The screening will raise donations to support Palestinian civil society.
Dance artist Laura Murphy presents two elements of Dance Stories, her multimedia exploration of women in Irish dance, made in collaboration with filmmaker Pato Cassinoni, animator Alan Early and composer Irene Buckley.
A free exhibition at Dance Limerick Studio on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 features audio-visual portraits of Limerick dance artists Lisa Cliffe, Mary Nunan and Angie Smalis.
The festival’s programmes of short film screenings will feature a wealth of Irish films alongside films from around the globe. Kryla, by Limerick-based Ukrainian director/choreographer Anastasiia Lapko, is an exploration of human relationships, mainly shot in the Burren, and will be screened as part of the festival’s 5th film programme on the afternoon of November 8.
Participatory events include a sound bath experience led by Irish-Trinidadian sound healer Maïa Nunes, and City Listening, a workshop in choreography for the camera led by Lucy Cash and Chloë Sayers.
