THE Limerick Cycling Campaign is celebrating three years since the launch of its pioneering e-Cargo Bike Trail across the city and county.

Launched in 2022 under the EU’s Horizon 2020 +CityxChange research and innovation programme, dozens of families got the chance to borrow an e-cargo bike to see how cycling could fit into their daily life.

The programme, in partnership with Limerick City and County Council, was initially funded  in its trial phase for one year but was extended far beyond the project’s initial timeline.

“We’re all in – moving the kids via a cargo bike is a no brainer. Not stuck in traffic, meaning consistent travel times, every day. Kids are warm and dry when it’s raining outside and they love it. I love listening to their chats and songs and I get a bit of exercise every day,” one family who took part in the scheme shared.

Participants used the bikes for everything from commuting to work and school runs to shopping trips and sporting activities, assisted by ongoing support from the Limerick Cycling Campaign and Dr James Greene at the University of Limerick through the ISCycle research project promoting inclusive e-bike uptake and sustainable use.

The Limerick e-Cargo Bike Trial continues to operate today as a community-led initiative, empowering local families to make greener transport choices and contributing to Limerick’s vision of a cleaner, more liveable city.
