“OUR communities are under siege.” Those were the words from a new group organising a protest in Limerick City this Saturday (November 1) against the erection of a number of wind farms across the county.
Members of groups opposing the erection of wind farms in Coolcappa, Bruff, Dromin, Athlacca, Ballinlee, Bruree, and Charleville have combined their ire against the proposed wind farms under the banner of a new collective, the Limerick Communities Alliance.
A statement from the group said it would be conducting a “massive slow drive protest” through the city today against wind farms in their areas.
The alliance said the protest is against the installation of over 30 “industrial wind turbines across rural County Limerick”, claiming that “the turbines, some of the largest ever proposed for such a densely populated rural area, have sparked serious concern among residents over health, safety, and environmental impacts”.
A spokesperson for the group said that “our rural communities are under siege” by the turbines, which they allege are being erected without “respect for residents’ rights”.
“The slow drive protest will begin at the Greyhound Track, Dock Road, Limerick, and proceed through the city centre. Supporters are encouraged to join the convoy or show solidarity from the roadside. Motorists are advised to expect delays during the event,” the group said in its statement.
The group said that it represents a “united front of local action groups committed to defending rural communities, ensuring responsible development, and holding decision-makers accountable for protecting public health and the environment”.
