ATHLUNKARD Boat Club showcased more than 125 years of the club’s history and heritage at a special photography exhibition aimed at sharing the long and storied journey of the club.

The exhibition featured over 60 photos, carefully collected and archived over a long period of time, including past memories donated from the community around the club and from family members of past rowers.

Athlunkard Boat Club is one of the oldest and most decorated rowing clubs in Limerick and the range of photos on display at the exhibition told the story of the many people linked to the club throughout its history, spanning from 1899 to the present day, representing over a century of local and club history.

The planning for the exhibition project took place over a number of years and was facilitated through support from The Heritage Council of Ireland and Limerick Civic Trust, for which the club committee said it was very grateful.

The exhibition was formally opened by Athlunkard Boat Club’s first international rowers – Maxine and Claire Murphy – who represented Ireland in the Homes Internationals in Nottingham, UK, in 1985 and again in Wales in 1987.

Featured in the exhibition were shots of club members both at home and abroad, including winners of the 1913 Senior Eights Championship of Ireland, Bryan O’Connor, Tom Earlie, Stephen Clancy, Joe Reid, Liam Forde, Mick Guerin, Morgan Costello, Donat Cantrell, and Jim Keane.

The exhibition was held at the Coach House exhibition space at the People’s Museum of Limerick.
