A JUDGE told a man he will not be driving his pregnant wife to hospital to have their baby as she disqualified him from driving for 50 years.
Thomas Cawley (37), of Mona Terrace, Clare Street, pleaded guilty in Limerick District Court to driving while disqualified on May 10 last.
Judge Partrica Harney was told that Mr Cawley has 169 previous convictions was disqualified at the time, and is currently serving a jail sentence.
His solicitor told the court that Cawley has “a very bad driving record”.
He noted the accused man was pleading to all the charges, telling the court “his wife is expecting their baby”.
Judge Harney replied that Cawley “won’t be driving her to hospital to have the baby”.
She imposed a 10-year ban for driving without insurance on the date and jailed Cawley for four months.
The judge imposed a second 10-year driving ban and four months in prison for driving while disqualified.
The court heard that Cawley was stopped by Gardaà while driving the same car four months later, while he was still under a driving ban.
On those charges, Judge Harney disqualified him for a further two 15-year periods and added two more jail sentences of four and five months to run consecutive to the other sentences and bans.
Should he wish to appeal any part of the penalties, Judge Harney set bail on those matters at Cawley’s own bond of €100 and a condition that he does not drive any vehicle.
