LIMERICK will host Germany during Ireland’s upcoming EU Presidency term this July.

Ambassadors of EU states in Ireland will be accompanied by the Irish Ambassador in the relevant EU member state capital, and will visit counties across Ireland for a programme of public engagements focused on EU relations.

Ambassadors will visit local authorities, community, sports and youth groups, libraries, and schools, amongst other everyday institutions.

Fianna Fáil Senator Dee Ryan says it is “an honour” for Limerick to host Germany.

“I am delighted that Limerick has been paired with Germany as part of our EU presidency. It gives Limerick a huge opportunity to discuss areas of mutual priority and interest with Germany, particularly floating offshore wind from the Shannon Estuary and how Ireland can contribute to European transition away from fossil fuels.”

Senator Ryan also added that she sees this as a chance for Limerick to deepen relations with Germany.

“It will be a moment for Limerick to deepen relationships with our German counterparts, to learn from their experience with developing floating offshore wind and other renewable energy projects and to discuss opportunities for collaboration and further cooperation in the future,” she said.

“German officials have previously visited Limerick and the Port of Foynes and as a member of the Shannon Estuary Economic Taskforce. That includes the reactivation of the rail line to the port and work on the Foynes to Limerick Road scheme which will connect the port of Foynes to the motorway near Limerick.”
