A 22-year old man was refused bail today, (Thursday), charged with assaulting Liam Higgins, (55), by allegedly stamping on his head, in Limerick city, on St Patrick’s night.

Darren Mason, of St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park, Limerick, was charged at Limerick District Court with one count of assault causing harm to Mr Higgins; one count of engaging in violent disorder; and one count of producing a traffic bollard capable of inflicting serious injury in a manner likely unlawfully to intimidate a person during the course of an altercation with Mr Higgins.

The court was shown CCTV footage of the alleged assault in which Gardaí claim persons including the accused threw bollards at Mr Higgins and stamped on his head.

Gardaí acknowledged in court that the CCTV footage shows a person they identify as Mr Higgins initially approaching Mr Mason and stabbing him with a knife.
