GARDAI have charged a man in connection with a serious assault on a Limerick father on St Patrick’s Day.
The suspect, aged in his 20s, is due to appear before Limerick District Court this Thursday.
William “Liam” Higgins, (50s), originally from Rhebogue and living at Grove Island, Corbally, suffered serious injuries to his head and body on St Patrick’s night.
Mr Higgins remains in intensive care at University Hospital Limerick following the alleged assault on Tuesday night last.
He was found seriously injured on the ground at O’Dwyer’s Bridge, off Athlunkard Street, at around 9.30pm.
Emergency service first responders treated Mr Higgins at the scene. He was then rushed by ambulance to UHL where he remains in a critical condition.
The scene at O’Dwyer’s Bridge and Athlunkard Street was the subject of a forensic examination by Gardai across Wednesday.
Gardai said today their investigation is “ongoing”.
Appealing for witnesses on Wednesday, a Garda spokesperson said: “Any road users or pedestrians who were in the Athlunkard Street area between 9pm and 10pm on Tuesday 17th March 2026 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.”
