LIMERICK paramedics are no longer going ahead with planned strikes and industrial action following ‘constructive’ discussions at the Labour Court.

SIPTU/Unite representatives met with the Court yesterday (Thursday, May 21) in Dublin after  following a dispute about pay conditions.

In a letter to members seen by the Limerick Post, John McCamley, SIPTU National Sector Organiser said: “While this engagement was difficult and challenging at times, we believe that significant progress has been made.”

“We remain in process, but the Labour Court has requested more time to deliberate some of the issues in dispute. In addition, the Labour Court has requested that the industrial action next week and the work-to-rule be stood down to allow the process to conclude”.

Mr McCamley confirmed: “The 72-hour stoppage next week is stood down. The work-to-rule will be stood down from noon Friday (May 22).

He also added that “unions can reissue notice to strike if a resolution is not achieved”.

Local paramedics and emergency medical technicians in Limerick and across the country first engaged in a 24-hour work stoppage on May 12 after implementing a work-to-rule.

Plans for strike action in Limerick were due to take place next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday outside the ambulance base in Dooradoyle, nearby University Hospital Limerick.
