A LIMERICK-based engineer consulting firm with long ties in the city has been acquired by an international firm.

PUNCH Consulting Engineers, one of the largest Irish-owned engineering consultancies, who have offices based in the heart of Limerick City, Dublin, Cork, and Galway, has been acquired by global firm COWI.

COWI confirmed that PUNCH, its teams, and offices, will become part of COWI’s Ireland and UK operations, but will still operate under the nationally recognised PUNCH name.

COWI has a firm international foothold, with offices across Scandinavia, the UK, North America, and India, employing almost 7,000 people worldwide.

COWI said the acquisition “brings together two highly experienced engineering consultancies, combining COWI’s international scale with PUNCH Consulting Engineers’ strong position in the Irish market to support clients across Ireland and the UK”.

PUNCH was founded in Limerick in 1973, growing over the past 50 years into one of Ireland’s best known engineering consultancies, with offices in Limerick City, Dublin, Cork, Galway, Glasgow, and Macclesfield.

Speaking following the announcement, PUNCH managing director Tim Murnane said: “We are very excited for PUNCH to become part of the COWI Group at a seminal time in the development of our country. Responding to the unprecedented level of infrastructure investment planned by our Government requires the best global expertise and the best local knowledge to ensure we deliver for our clients and country.”

“We have built our business around strong client relationships, technical excellence, and a commitment to delivering sustainable engineering solutions across buildings, infrastructure and the wider built environment. COWI shares those values and this move gives us the opportunity to build on our legacy while opening new pathways for our teams and clients.”

COWI executive vice president Andy Sloan: “PUNCH has built an outstanding reputation, delivering high-quality engineering solutions across the built environment. By combining its trusted local expertise with COWI’s international experience, we are creating a stronger platform to support clients and deliver sustainable, future-ready buildings and infrastructure across Ireland.”
