CASTLETROY GC will stage its Trade Electric-sponsored Men’s Senior Scratch Cup this Sunday.
First played in 1948, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious around and has attracted a stellar field.
Tralee’s Mark Gazi, now at Northwestern University, returns to defend the title he won in a dramatic play-off with Davy Reddan (Castleknock) last year.
Also, vying for the trophy will be 2025 West of Ireland champion, Dylan Holmes, 2026 Munster Strokeplay Champion, Paul Coughlan, former Irish Close winners, Paul O’Hanlon and Quentin Carew, as well as Irish U18 Internationals, Isaac Oliver, John-William Burke and Luke Furlong.
The quality of former champions is further exemplified by a unique roll of honour containing seven Walker Cup representatives – John Burke, Jimmy Bruen, Max McCready, JB Carr, Tom Craddock, David Sheahan and James Sugrue.
Local interest will rest with the likes of Dean McMahon, Andrew McCormack, John Kavanagh jnr, Fergus Harrold and Frank Hackett.
At Limerick GC, it’s Senior Scratch Cup (36 hole) was won by the aforementioned Dean McMahon on the first hole of a play-off against his Castletroy clubmate Andrew McCormack.
In his second round, McMahon shot a course record 66 (six-under par).
Adam Toth (Ballyneety) and Con McGee (Limerick) won the Junior and Intermediate Cups, respectively.
