A NETFLIX documentary about the tragic killing of Limerick man Jason Corbett by his wife and father-in-law, Molly and Tom Martens, has won Outstanding Documentary Film at the True Crime Awards in London.
A Deadly American Marriage, co-produced by Limerick journalist and author Brian Carroll, featured moving personal accounts by members of the Corbett family, including Mr Corbett’s children, Jack and Sarah, and his sister Tracey Corbett-Lynch.
It was among the most watched programmes on Netflix last year.
The documentary was also shortlisted for an Emmy Award, shortlisted in the Outstanding Crime and Justice Documentary category at this year’s News and Documentary Emmy Awards in May.
It shows the brutal murder of Jason Corbett, originally from Limerick, but living and working in the US, who was killed at his home in North Carolina in August 2015.
His wife and father-in-law, Molly and Tom Martens, were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20-25 years in prison in 2017, but their convictions were overturned on appeal in 2021.
Plans for a retrial in 2023 did not take place after the father and daughter agreed a deal with prosecutors.
They were then sentenced to between four years and three months to six years and two months with credit for time served. They were released from prison in June 2024.
Mr Carroll has also published a book about the case, under the same name, which was published in hardback last August. It is due to be released in paperback later this month.
