LIMERICK City and County Council has been urged to look at ways of preventing unnecessary disposal of bottles and cans in bins on the city’s streets.

Fianna Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery also asked the local authority to mitigate the effects of scavenging in bins for these cans and bottles.

In response to the City East representative, the Council revealed that it is currently investigating a number of service options to address the unintended consequences arising from the introduction of the Re-Turn scheme.

The local authority also said that its Cleansing Section has been replacing out of date and damaged street bins in the city centre. As part of this programme, 15 bins have been ordered with a more robust locking mechanism.

Separately, the Council’s Litter Management Section has appointed consultants to advise on waste management solutions in the city centre under the mayoral programme.
