AN 18-year old Limerick woman is one of a number of people who may have been fooled by a convincing new scam in which thieves extract information that allows them to steal from bank accounts.
The young woman from Mungret reported to Gardaí that money had been taken from her Revolut online bank account without her permission.
Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Ber Leetch told the Limerick Post that “earlier that day she received a phone call from an individual claiming to be from Revolut”.
“He stated that she had been frozen out of her Revolut account and in order to reactivate it she had to provide him with her log in details.
“Unfortunately, the girl followed all of his instructions and provided him with her details and so he had access to her Revolut account.
“Once the phone conversation ended, the girl accessed her account and she discovered that almost €800 had been taken from her account without her permission.”
Sgt Leetch said that normally frauds and scams involve bank accounts and bank cards “but criminals can steal our money from any type of account if we provide them with our passwords and details.”
“Remember when it comes to any type of financial institution – bank, post office, credit union, or money transferring account your passwords and PIN numbers are the only thing that protect your money so do not share them with anybody, ever.”
