
TRIBUTES have poured in at the passing of Seán Collins, former CEO of Bord na gCon, a stalwart of the Limerick golfing community, and father of Limerick TD and Minister of State Niall Collins.
Mr Collins passed away this past Saturday (April 25) at University Hospital Limerick surrounded by his loving family. Late of Patrickswell, and formerly of Abbeyfeale, he will be laid to rest this Monday in Reilig Ide Naofa Cemetery in Abbeyfeale.
A wave of tributes have poured in from across Limerick and Ireland following his passing, with mourners describing Mr Collins as “a very kind gentleman” and “a pleasure to meet and chat with”.
In a post online, Minister Collins wrote that “it’s with deep sadness I wish to let you know of the passing of my father Sean Collins. A fantastic father to me and my brothers, husband to my mother Marion, and a dear grandfather.”
“His kindness extended to many people, including his wide circle of family and friends.”
Greyhound Racing Ireland – formerly Bord na gCon, based at that time on Henry Street in Limerick City – offered condolences to the Collins family, saying: “Seán made an immense contribution to greyhound racing in Ireland during his tenure. His deep understanding of the sport earned him widespread respect across the greyhound racing community and beyond.”
“He will be remembered not only for his achievements, but also for the lasting impact he had on all who had the privilege of working with him.
“We extend our sincere condolences to Seán’s wife Marion, sons James and Niall, daughters in law, grandchildren and extended family.”
A respected golfer in his time, Mr Collins was both a past captain and president of Lahinch Golf Club.
The 93 year old is predeceased by his son John, his parents James (Jimmy) and Margaret, and his brothers Maurice (Mossie) and Michael.
He is survived by his loving wife Marion, sons James and Niall, daughters-in-law Trish and Eimear, grandchildren Enda, Eleanor, John, James, Conor, and Kealon, his brother, former MEP and minister Gerard Collins, sister Mary Carroll, brothers in law and sisters in law, nephews, nieces relatives and his many friends.
Mr Collins will be reposing at Ss Peter and Paul Church, Crecora, this Sunday (April 26) from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral Mass will take place tomorrow (Monday) at 12pm, followed by burial at Reilig Ide Naofa Cemetery.
The family have suggested donations to Alzheimer’s Society Adare Day Care in lieu of flowers.
