FINE Gael councillor Daniel Butler expressed serious concern at the recent surge in vehicle thefts and related criminal activity across the Raheen, Dooradoyle, and Mungret areas.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, Cllr Butler said he is aware of a spate of vehicle thefts and attempted thefts in previous weeks.

“Residents are increasingly concerned by what appears to be a growing and organised pattern of criminal activity targeting local communities,” the City West representative explained.

“In a number of cases, those responsible have entered homes to obtain car keys before stealing vehicles parked outside. Other valuables and opportunistic items have also been taken during these incidents.”

Cllr Butler said that “what is particularly alarming is that criminals are now entering people’s homes in order to gain access to vehicle keys”.

“This is an incredibly invasive crime that leaves families feeling unsafe in their own homes. Nobody should have to worry about intruders entering their property while they sleep.”

Based on photographs and video footage shared by residents, the Fine Gael man believes there are strong similarities between a number of the incidents.

“From the evidence I have seen, it appears the same individuals may be involved in many of these thefts. Residents are understandably angry and frustrated that these incidents continue to occur across our communities,” he said.

Cllr Butler said the situation has reached a point where a stronger response is required, hitting out that “action must be taken. The level of vehicle thefts we are seeing is becoming unacceptable and many residents feel the problem is now out of control.”

“Garda resources must be directed towards identifying and apprehending those responsible before these incidents escalate further.”

The councillor is calling for increased Garda patrols, targeted operations in affected areas, and continued engagement with residents to help tackle the problem.

“I would encourage anyone who has CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, or information relating to suspicious activity to report it directly to An Garda Síochána. Community vigilance can play an important role, but residents also need to see a robust response from law enforcement.

“Our communities deserve to feel safe and secure. Those responsible for these crimes must be identified and brought before the courts,” he concluded.
