A LIMERICK fast-food restaurant was temporarily closed by the HSE after inspectors found areas of the floor “filthy with food debris”.

The closure order, which has since been lifted, was served on the Captain’s Catch in Parnell Street in May after an inspection found numerous problems with hygiene.

The report on the  inspection stated that staff at the restaurant had poor knowledge and insufficient training in food safety.

“There is an absence of a basic cleaning programme as evidenced by the build-up of dirt and debris in the hard to reach areas, particularly noted in the rear store. Cleaning is hampered by poor storage practices, loose waste on the floor, personal clothing noted on food containers,” inspectors noted in the report.

“There is build-up of some loose, cut potatoes/chips on the drain in the potato peeling and chipping room. The floor tiles in the chipping area are stained. The cleaning equipment is poorly maintained.

“The probe thermometer was greasy to touch. The food mixer bowl was left unclean with dough-bits remaining in the bowl. Hard to reach areas of the floor, particularly under the equipment was filthy with food debris.”

Inspectors found “raw beef burgers were stored above ready to eat foodstuffs including cheese and the turkey bacon.”

There was no anti-bacterial soap for handwashing, access to the hand washing sink was hindered and staff were not wearing hats or any personal protective clothing.

The closure order was made on May 13 and lifted one week later.
