Ulster Bank League Weekend Preview

-

THERE is no doubting the tie of the weekend. Shannon versus Young Munster, however there is plenty more action in store. Once more Ross O’Donoghue goes through the weekend’s Ulster Bank League Ties.

Division 1A
Cork Con v Garryowen
Garryowen are now rock bottom in Division 1A and face a huge challenge to escape a relegation play off. Paul Cunningham has voiced his concern over the commitments of his Munster ‘A’ players. His side struggle without Murray, Cusack and Co. Cork Con are in a similar situation but have the strength in depth to pull through. Prediction: Cork Con to win.

Young Munster v Shannon
Last November thousands of people saw Shannon edge out a Young Munster side with Paul O’Connell among their ranks. Do contracted players help or hinder? Marcus Horan’s return to action for Shannon has not coincided with a run of form. Shannon need to adopt a ‘Back to basics’ approach. Their mistakes are a massive help to opposing teams so at least the solution to their current plight is in their own hands. Literally. No point betting against Young Munster on their recent record but this derby could still surprise. Prediction: Young Munster to win.
Division 1B
U.L. Bohemian v U.C.C.
UL Bohemians could become the only league side with a 100% record for February if they can put another one in the win column this Saturday. They’ll wear the favourite’s tag at Annacotty against a UCC side who are patchy away from home. Bohs deserve credit for putting a run of form together without key players. Prediction: UL Bohs to win.
Dungannon v  Bruff
With just one win in Division 1B this calendar year, Bruff seem to be keeping their ambitions for silverware focused on cup action. Last week’s home defeat to Galwegians was evidence of that. Dungannon are also on the slide of late and, coached by former Ireland prop Justin Fitzpatrick, will target this fixture to stop the rot. Prediction: Dungannon to win.

Division 2
Dublin University v Thomond
The relief was palpable at Liam Fitzgerald Park last weekend as Thomond notched a rare yet impressive win over Malone. This week they’ll hope to teach the students of Dublin University a few lessons. The Trinity boys are beatable at home but have plenty of strike runners from Deep.  Prediction: Dublin University to win.

Old Crescent v Bective Rangers
Its the weakest offense against the strongest defense in Division 2 for this fixture. Bective don’t give tries away cheaply while Old Crescent have to work very hard to get points on the board. But morale has been improving at Rosbrien of late and a win over the Dublin 4 heads could breathe life back into the season. Prediction: Bective to Win.
