A 41-year-old Limerick woman has been charged with the murder of 65-year-old Paddy Redmond at an apartment in Mount Kennett on November 10, 2013.

At a sitting of Limerick District Court this Monday, Detective sergeant Padraic Byrnes gave evidence of arresting the accused, Mary Lynch at her address on Cecil Street at 7:20pm on Sunday night last.

Judge Marian O’Leary heard that Ms Lynch was brought to Henry Street Garda Station and charged with the murder of Mr Redmond.

Det Sgt Byrnes said that after caution, Ms Lynch replied “not guilty” when she was given a copy of the charge sheet.

This Monday morning, legal aid defence solicitor John Devane asked the court if he could come on record for the 41-year-old accused and said that it was a suitable case under the free legal aid scheme.

Mr Devane requested that Det Sgt Byrnes would deal with the matter of a preparation of a book of evidence in the case “expeditiously” as his client had been first questioned about the matter over a year ago and was currently in poor health.

Sgt Donal Cronin told Judge O’Leary that the State was seeking that the accused woman be remanded in custody for the purpose of preparation and service of the book of evidence.

Me Devane said that the matter of bail for his client did not arise in the District Court and that it was a matter for the High Court to determine, but said that he would be applying for bail next Monday on behalf of the 41-year-old.

The legal aid defence solicitor further sought that Ms Lynch receive all the necessary medical and psychological treatment required as she was on a strict regime of medication.

Remanding the accused woman in custody, Judge O’Leary added that the woman was to receive all medical and psychological assessments required and that any medical treatment was a matter for the prison authorities.

The matter was adjourned to Tuesday when a longer remand date will be agreed before the court.

65 year old Paddy Redmond suffered a single stab wound at a neighbours apartment on the first floor of the Mount Kennett complex.

Gardai from Henry Street were called to the scene and paramedics battled to save his life.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick, but died a short time later.

Mr Redmond had been living at a number of addresses in Limerick in the last number of years but moved to the Dock Road complex over 12 months before his murder.

Originally from Dublin, Mr Redmond moved to Limerick some years ago and is survived by his three grown up daughters and estranged wife.
