equality5SINN Féin have launched their ‘Yes 2 Equality’ campaign in Limerick with Cllr Maurice Quinlivan heralding it as an opportunity for Ireland to “get with the times” and to “cherish all children of the nation equally”.

Cllr Quinlivan considers the campaign “essential” for Sinn Féin and told the Limerick Post that its focus is about civil marriage equality, and will not affect religious marriage, or any religious groups.

“Equality is a core republican belief. We are organising a strong, positive Sinn Féin campaign,” the local party leader revealed.

Cllr Quinlivan also claimed that the No campaign is talking about issues which he believes are completely irrelevant to this referendum, such as surrogacy and adoption.

“In this day and age we shouldn’t be treating the LGBT community as second class citizens, and we should vote to allow them to marry. I’m sure anyone who is currently married or intends to marry, would not be happy with just being allowed a civil partnership, while others are free to marry the person they love.

“In my eyes any couple, regardless of gender, who love each other should have the right to get married. We are confident but not complacent that the Irish people will give a resounding historic yes vote to marriage equality on May 22,” he predicted.
