No wasted effort in Moyross

DSCF2489 (2)WHILE various towns, villages and estates in Limerick had reason to celebrate last week’s Tidy Town’s results, one local group was particularly pleased to be recognised.

The Moyross Resident Forum’s food waste prevention project won the ‘Most Innovative Project’ award for its role in investigating new approaches to reducing the amount of food going to waste in the local community.

Originally conceived by Limerick City and County Council, the project explored whether an alternative approach to managing food would be successful among 19 households who participated in the six week trial period.

Led by Moyross Residents Forum’s Tidy Towns group under the direction of Limerick City and County Council, the project was supported by Moyross Community Companions, Barnardos, the HSE Public Health Nurse, VEC tutors and the Limerick Sports Partnership.

The participating groups developed a six week education programme with the aim of saving money, preventing food waste and promoting related educational messages. Cookery classes were a key element along with food storage, food shopping, composting, nutrition and health and wellbeing from healthy eating.
