“Peace” deal remains in place despite Collins murder

THE “peace” deal among Limerick’s feuding families remains on course, despite the murder of Roy Collins last Thursday.

As exclusively reported in the Limerick Post some weeks ago, a number of local business people, community activists and clergy had brought the feuding gangs together and drawn up a document which those involved were prepared to sign and bring an end to the conflict.

Gang members had also discussed decommissioning weapons.

One of the negotiating team this week expressed confidence that there would, despite recent events, be a successful conclusion to talks.

He did agree, however, that the death of innocent father-of-two, Roy Collins, was a setback.

According to a report in a Sunday newspaper, the warring families had agreed to meet later this week after their imprisoned relatives collectively agreed to the “peace” deal.

The negotiator who contacted the Limerick Post said there was an acknowledgement by the families concerned that the ongoing feud had to end.

The families, he added, recognised that their younger members wanted a peaceful existence.

The negotiators did not wish to be identified until such time as a settlement was agreed.
