From madrigals to Merry Widow

LOOK to the former Franciscan Church for the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s MBNA Limerick International Music Festival this July 7 to 12.  Centrally placed and with established and emerging music stars leading the programme, there are eight concerts scheduled over five days.

Anticipate three performances by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, as well as opera classics, new world music by candlelight, intimate chamber recitals and a late club nightly at The Strand Hotel.

“Following on the strong choral tradition of the church, it is most appropriate that three unmissable song recital and choral performances feature on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12, July at the church,” says PRO Charlotte Eglington. “From Madrigals to Musicals is a candlelit concert featuring  classics down through the centuries. Seoda, an award-winning Limerick choir has developed a reputation for excellence in choral circles”. At the Franciscans on Friday 10 July at 10.15pm, there’s more:

“A cast of international stars will sing arias from some of Vienna’s greatest residents.  Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutti, Figaro, and Don Giovanni feature alongside selections from Die Fledermaus by Strauss and Lehar’s much loved Merry Widow.  Star soprano Cara O’Sullivan, mezzo-soprano Carolyn Dobbin and bass Owen Gilhooly will be joined by tenor Robin Tritschler”.  Saturday July 11 at 7.30pm.

This ensemble cast of soloists makes a second appearance when they team up with the ICO and National Chamber Choir under Paul Hillier to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn.  His classic Harmoniemesse was written in 1802 and was the composer’s last major work. Hormoniemesse will be preceded by Kurt Weill’s “wonderfully sleazy” Concerto for Violin and Winds. Performed by Festival Artistic director Anthony Marwood, this evening’s Sunday 12th music begins 7.30pm at the Henry Street former church.
